I loved it.
In any case, anything with Carrie Ann-Moss is worth viewing anyway. I still remember seeing her in the first scenes of the first Matrix and then when she re-appeared in Jessica Jones, it actually lifted JJ, despite the show being amazing in its own way. And Bugs, the other main character in the current movie - Jessica Henwick played Colleen Wing, Iron Fist’s girlfriend.
There are so many of Lana Wachowski’s favorites that you can see, especially from the Sense 8 universe. Purab Kohli appears in some early scenes, then the cop and the German are both there. Keanu Reeves of course is as low-key as possible and Neil Patrick Harris plays an interestingly different role too.
But in the end it is a love story. Between The One and Trinity and the movie plays on that and works so well.
The rest is the usual Matrix stuff. Neo is Thomas Anderson, back to being a programmer who has created The Matrix game, which is a huge hit. His boss is Agent Smith, who is an independent entity who also gets released from the Matrix somehow when Neo takes his leap. And once is he is rescued and goes to Io (Zion is gone), he works with Bugs and the gang to find Trinity (Priyanka Chopra’s character Sati helps) and they finally get her and all is well that ends well as they soar away into the sky.
The scene in the bar where Tiffany realizes she is Trinity and Neo and Trinity move towards each other through a horde of bots trying to hold them back, reaching out for each other, until their hands clasp and meet and cause an explosion that allows them to get away onto the bike…it’s just classic Hindi film stuff.
Cool stuff.
Oh and Yahya Abdul Mateen as Morpheus is also so cool. I just remember him from Watchmen as Manhattan and just plays it really well.
